Normative Migration Theory: A Social Choice Theoretic Approach∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to provide a normative analysis of some migration issues. Our main objective is to develop a social-choice theoretical framework to evaluate alternative immigration policies of a country. For illustrative purposes, we present some simple results that are characterizations of some policy evaluation functions that have some specific features. JEL Classification Numbers: D70, D71, F22

Welfare Impacts of Imposing a Tariff on Rice in Iran vs an Export Tax in Thailand: A Game Theoretic Approach
In this study, the social welfare impacts of the interaction of Iranian rice import policies and Thai export policies are analyzed using a game theoretic approach in conjunction with econometric supply and demand models. The joint impacts of increasing the world price of rice, resulting from the export policies in Thailand along with changes in tariff rates in Iran, on social welfare are analyz...
متن کاملA Statistical Decision-Theoretic Framework for Social Choice
In this paper, we take a statistical decision-theoretic viewpoint on social choice, putting a focus on the decision to be made on behalf of a system of agents. In our framework, we are given a statistical ranking model, a decision space, and a loss function defined on (parameter, decision) pairs, and formulate social choice mechanisms as decision rules that minimize expected loss. This suggests...
متن کامل“A Game-Theoretic Framework to Study the Influence of Globalisation on Social Norms of Co-operation”
A game-theoretic framework is developed to study the evolution of social norms in a society. The two main theoretical assumptions underpinning the model are, first, that agents have some kind of “social” preferences, in addition to standard “self-interested” preferences. Second, individuals modify their behaviour over time in accordance to the “imitation of the most successful agent” paradigm. ...
متن کاملPositive Constraints on Normative Political Theory
We consider the relationship between positive and normative political theory, emphasising both the role of normative ideas in motivating political behaviour and particularly the constraints on normative theory imposed by positive theory. Our point of departure is Christiano’s recent claim that the rational choice approach to positive and normative political theory is self-defeating. In arguing ...
متن کاملGame Theory, Information, and Deliberative Democracy
We contend that, with a suitably broad notion of rationality and a diverse set of motivations, the game-theoretic tradition is particularly well suited for generating insights about effects of deliberative institutions and that progress in the development of deliberative democratic theory hinges on making proper sense of the relationship between game-theoretic and normative theoretic approaches...
